Language Arts

Our Language Arts program, which includes Reading, Writing, Decoding/Phonics and Spelling, is based around the 6-Traits. Throughout the day, children take part in Guided Reading, Writer’s Workshop, and Self-Selected Reading.

Math

Some of the topics explored in First Grade are addition and subtraction strategies, ordinal numbers, counting by 1's, 2's, 5's 10's, counting forward and backward, patterning, place value, money, time measurement, fractions, shapes and geometry, graphing, expanded notation, days of the week, names of the months, and double digit addition and subtracting (without regrouping/carrying).

Science

For Science, our class uses the Foss Kit. some of the Science topics explored in First Grade are Balance and Motion, Plants, Space, Rocks, Pebbles Sand and Silt weather, recycling, and living and non-living things.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies is also integrated into our Language Arts program. This means that your child may be reading out of selected reading and writing about subject matter. Some of the social Studies topics explored in first Grade are the months, basic needs vs. wants, geography, map skills, communities, goods and services, voting, and citizenship.
